Alfred & Constance spring summer menu

Alfred and Constance

Today I am 5 months into growing little bubba Cameron and I can’t believe how fast the time has flown. In just 4 months we’ll be welcoming our son our daughter and we’ve got Christmas etc in between which will make the time whiz past.

We’re ridiculously excited to meet our little one, but in the mean-time we’re making the most of our last few months child-free and dining out whenever we can. I’m going to do my best to take bub out and get him or her used to restaurants from a young age (as any child of mine should) but it’s nice to enjoy a bit of time just the two of us before we become three.

One of my favourite weekend outings is the Sunday lunch and two weeks ago, we did just that, visiting Alfred & Constance to sample their new spring/summer menu.

Passionfruit and vanilla virgin mojito

Sadly there were no mocktails on the menu but they were more than happy to whip up the passionfruit and vanilla mojito without the rum for me. This was the ultimate summer refreshment and I’ll definitely have a go at recreating it at home.

CRISPY CALAMARI WITH SWEET PAPRIKA MAYONNAISE $14.90

I had to convince Will that we needed a starter but after his first bite of the butter-soft calamari ($14.90), he was glad I twisted his arm. The batter was nice and light and crispy and the calamari was – I’m going to go out on a limb here – the most tender I’ve ever had. I couldn’t try the sweet paprika mayonnaise because of the raw egg but apparently it was really good.

STEAK SANDWICH CIABATTA, RIB FILLET, HALOUMI, CARAMELISED ONIONS, TOMATO, GEM LETTUCE & CHIPS $17.90

You can see why he didn’t want a starter – the steak sandwich with juicy rib fillet, haloumi (why did I not get a taste of the halloumi?!?), caramelised onions, tomato, lettuce and chips ($17.90) was enough to feed the hungriest of boys.

CHIPS & AIOLI $9

I wasn’t really paying attention to Will’s order so asked the waitress for a side of chips with my lunch. We probably didn’t need quite so many but they do the most moreish chips here. They’re hand-cut nice and thick, golden and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside.  They clearly use good-quality potatoes.

CHICKEN SCHNITZEL RED CABBAGE & FENNEL SLAW, SOUR CREAM, LEMON & CAPERS $21.90

I can’t go past a chicken schnitzel at the moment and the A&C version ($21.90) did not disappoint. The breast meat was tender and juicy and the crumb nice and light and not at all oily like it can be. On the side was a salad of cabbage and fennel with sour cream, lemon and capers.

It was a good balance between something  a little bit naughty and healthy.

Waiting

Yep this is a photo looking down the table. I started playing with my camera. They were quite busy on the day we visited and I’m thinking a little under-staffed so we waited and waited and waited for our plates to be cleared and dessert menus proffered.

PASSIONFRUIT PAVLOVA SOFT CENTRED MERINGUE, LEMON CURD & FRESH PASSIONFRUIT $14.50

I started to get a bit impatient so googled the dessert menu and had my selection ready when the waiter came to clear the table. You probably know this already but I am a serious sucker for anything pavlova like but add passionfruit and I’m in heaven.

There was just the right amount of passionfruit, cream, meringue and curd to get a little in each mouthful and it was light and refreshing rather than sweet and heavy. I would most definitely order this again ($14.50).

Alfred & Constance

We headed home with full bellies and relaxed in front of a movie (something I’m thinking will be a rarity soon). If you haven’t seen it, The Internship isn’t really worth seeing (in my humble opinion).
